Spring and Summer Table Decor Trends for 2024

As we approach the warmer months, it’s the perfect time to refresh your table decor with the latest trends. To bring you the best insights, I shopped at the most popular home decor stores like Pottery Barn, Crate and Barrel, Birch and Lane, Arhaus, and William Sonoma to see what’s trending. I took plenty of photos, so you can skip the trip to the store and click add to cart from the comfort of your couch! So, whether hosting a casual BBQ or an elegant dinner party, these trends will help you create a stunning tablescape that wows your guests this season.

Adding warmth with wicker placemats

Wicker is making a strong comeback in home decor for furniture, accessories, wall installations, and table settings. At least one display showcased a tablescape with wicker placemats in every store I went into! While trendy now, wicker has been around for ages and truthfully never went out of style. It’s a versatile material, and its organic look can work in any table decor aesthetic you’re going for, from beachy cottage to boho chic or an elegant modern table. Regardless of the vibe you’re going for with your event or dinner, there is a shade or weave pattern to match that will add texture, depth, and warmth to your tablescape. Wicker placements are a timeless table decor item you’ll use for years!

Making statements through layering patterns

Mixing patterns used to be a faux pas, but now it’s all about making a bold statement by layering bright florals, busy animal prints, and funky geometric designs on your plates, napkins, and tablecloths. The key to this look is ensuring the patterns share a common colour palette or theme. Take the examples below. The first example weaves pinks and navies throughout its paired patterns, while the bee example features a contrasting white-on-black honeycomb pattern with a floral print plate stack. It’s also essential when mixing patterns to consider their scale—combining large-scale patterns with smaller, intricate ones creates visual contrast without overwhelming the eye. Think dainty motifs with bold abstract patterns like in the last example. Another tip is not to mix more than two to three patterns to avoid visual clutter.

A spectrum of pinks, blues, and yellows

This season, trending colours span a spectrum of pinks, blues, and yellows, ranging from vibrant hues to dusty, muted tones. These colours create a stunning contrast with neutral plate settings and placemats. Adding a colourful napkin or tablecloth is a cost-effective way to add a splash of colour and make your table decor feel in season among your timeless and staple pieces. If you’re feeling more daring and splurge-worthy, you could ditch your basic clear glassware and upgrade to the textured, tinted glasses like in example two, or opt for a plate set with colour to create an unexpected and unique tablescape. This year’s palettes and layered patterns trend reminds me of the popular Netflix series Bridgerton, moving away from simple and clean tablescapes to extravagant and bold settings. Who wouldn’t want to emulate an event fit for royals?

Geometric and minimal details

Contrary to the busier trends, there is still a place for something a little more dialled down for those who prefer the less is more look. For example, the simple line detailing adds definition to the plate in the second example and is carried through to the napkin, making it a subtle step up from a basic black-and-white setting. Or, if you’re looking for something that works with your current white dishes and isn’t too loud, you could opt for a tasteful chunky geometric pattern like in examples one and three. What’s great about these options is you could easily use them throughout multiple occasions and holidays by dressing them up or down with other on-theme elements like centrepieces, florals, and other decorations. Or even match them with a few of the different trends we’ve outlined in this post for an elevated and timeless tablescape.

Organic shapes and plates

The last trend I’m seeing this season is organic plate sets in terms of their shapes and colours. As the world becomes increasingly digital and photoshopped, people seem to gravitate to more natural and imperfect elements for their home decor, events, and table settings, as they can warm up a space and make it feel more inviting and relaxing. Think straight off the pottery wheel or handmade pottery that embraces the imperfections in the pieces. This adds character to your table settings, and organic and natural plate sets will be a timeless staple in your table decor collection as you can dress them up or down.

From the warmth of wicker placemats to the boldness of layered patterns or colours, the simplicity of geometric details, and the organic charm of handmade plates, there’s something for every style and preference this season!
